For a kitchen breakfast bar-counter, you would probably choose chairs that most closely matched the ambiance of the kitchen. Most kitchens have a lot of light in them for practical reasons. It is hard to wash, chop, and cook without adequate illumination. Therefore, most kitchens are done up in whites and bright colors.
Good chairs for the kitchen would be the simple kind, with four legs and a padded seat. The seat could be covered in a light or bright colored fabric. The material should be resistant to oils and food stains. The kitchen environment is hazardous to many fine fabrics. It is better to have them covered in sturdy, stain-resistant materials.
It is alright to get bar stools with arms for the kitchen. If you do, you need to make sure there is plenty of room under the counter for the arms. Otherwise, people will never be able to scoot up to the counter. They will be forced to lean forward to get their food and drinks.
You should always leave 10 to 13 inches between the top of the chair’s seat and the bottom of the bar-counter. This gives people plenty of room for their thighs to fit comfortably without pinching. At the same time, it does not leave so much room that the eating surface is high above the seat.
If you are furnishing the bar of a recreation room, your priorities will be a little different. You will not have to worry so much about stains and oils. You can get the chairs upholstered in leather or fine fabrics. You can get more refined-looking fabrics with deeper colors and richer textures.
In recreation room bars, you can go for solid hardwood legs and backs for your chairs. They may add bronze or copper trim to the dark hardwoods for an old-world effect. Your chairs will be perfect for a dim bar if you choose these combination’s of light and dark.
Make sure you have enough chairs for the length of bar-counter you have in your recreation room. You should allow about 25 inches from the middle of one seat to the middle of the next in line. If they are extra wide, allow an extra inch or two.
Figure 12 ½ inches to the middle of the first chair, and then add 25 inches for each chair you want to add. You should have at least another 12 ½ inches left at the end. When you have measured your bar-counter in this way, you will know whether you have room for four or six chairs.
